MEDIA RELEASE: Labor welcomes fresh ideas on new multicultural laws

Shadow Minister for Multicultural Affairs Jayne Stinson has kicked off consultation with multicultural groups across SA about proposed new laws to govern the sector.

The SA Multicultural Bill seeks to:

-       Dissolves the peak advisory group SAMEAC and replace it with a new SA Multicultural Commission

-       Update language in the original 1980 Bill

-       Introduces a Parliamentary Declaration

-       Mandates that a Multicultural Charter is drawn up (but is not included in the Bill)

Labor believes there’s ample room to improve the government’s Bill, especially considering it allows a reduction in the number of women on the peak advisory body.

The Shadow Minister is hosting a series of online forums to discuss the Bill and issues in the sector more broadly. To attend simply email badcoe@parliament.sa.gov.au or call 8371 5600.

I know the only way to get laws that work and stand the test of time is to thoroughly engage with the people it most directly impacts – our multicultural community.

That’s why I’m embarking on a comprehensive program of consultation with our multicultural sector – from leaders at some of our biggest ethnic organisations to participants in grassroots cultural groups.

I want to hear your big ideas to make our multicultural communities as vibrant, well-resourced and successful as possible.

This Bill can be made fairer - especially for women. I want to hear from our diverse communities about further changes to this Bill to make these laws work for everyone.

The beautiful state we share is the product of decades of migration and we owe it to ourselves to make sure our laws reflect what multicultural communities want and need.
